James William Murray, 2023
This photographic portrait was taken in William Murray’s studio in Brighton. Boll was eager to incorporate one of William Murray’s signature materials and this portrait captures the reflection of the artist in a sheet of copper. The portrait was shot on a medium format digital camera using available daylight.
James William Murray makes minimal, monochromatic, and gestural paintings. His work explores corporeality and tactility through the materiality of the medium. Murray’s graphite paintings involve burnishing pure carbon pigment onto linen and canvas, resulting in reflective surfaces with intricate textures. Other works embrace incidental forms of mark-making, such as his Anti-Form paintings, where he repurposes pieces of cloth used to scrub his studio floor, stretching them to form compositions that highlight the physicality and context of their making. All his work emphasises a sensual engagement with raw materials.
The following editioned prints of this photograph are available in Fuji Crystal lustre archival quality paper. Each print is personally checked for quality, signed, dated, and includes a signed certificate of authenticity.
